Grocer Spotlight: Key Market
Key Market is a local grocery store in Redwood City that touts “Good People, Quality Food, and Honest Value.” They have a long history with EnergySmart Grocer, from installing energy-efficient lighting and optimizing their refrigeration systems to replacing their roofs with thermoplastic reflective roofing material.
Thanks to PG&E’s On-Bill Financing Program and EnergySmart Grocer, Key Market was able to leverage energy savings in 2014 to continue to implement new projects.
“They’ve helped us with four projects over the last few years, and we’ve counted on their expertise and recommendations every step of the way. They’ve coordinated all the PG&E rebates and streamlined the process for us quite a bit,” said Chris Dehoff, president at Key Market.
The latest project at their Redwood City location included a variety of measures, such as:
- Retrofitting glass doors on open refrigerated cases
- Retrofitting refrigerated case motors with high-efficiency ECMs
- Replacing open refrigerated cases with high-efficiency reach-in cases
This project will save them more than 85,000 kWh annually and is expected to cut their energy bill by about $1,100 each month. “The savings are there. We’ve dropped our overall kilowatt demand by about 15% over the last few years, and we have actually added refrigeration display space over that time,” said Dehoff.
Key Market is looking forward to working with EnergySmart Grocer in the future. They plan to replace their current T8 fluorescent ceiling lights with LEDs. “These lighting projects are so much more exciting than energy control jobs because of their obvious impact on the store’s appearance. Jobs like that generate a lot of instant customer feedback,” said Dehoff.
